Health claims and EFSA for food supplements
Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006: only authorised, assessed claims are permitted.
Health claims are health-related statements for foods and food supplements. In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 governs which claims are permitted: only claims from the authorised list, positively assessed by EFSA, may be used — depending on nutrient amount and consumption recommendation.
How the assessment works
- Applicants submit dossiers to EFSA
- EFSA assesses the scientific substantiation (cause-effect)
- Positively assessed claims enter the Union list (incl. Regulation (EU) No 432/2012)
- Use only under the conditions (amount, reference values)
Obligations of the manufacturer
- Significant amount: the nutrient dose must match the claimed effect
- Declaration under Regulation (EC) No 1169/2011
- Warnings per claim (e.g. overdose, target group exclusions)
- Disease-related claims: prohibited
